OUR STORY

THERE IS NOTHING MORE REWARDING THAN BREEDING GOOD CATTLE

Karen Arnottpurchased ‘Koomoorang’ in December 1975, in a secluded valley only 2km from the village of Currabubula and 30km south west of the regional hub of Tamworth.

At first, it was about fattening steers on a rising market. It wasn’t long until restockers became too expensive, which led to the first purchase of breeders in 1983. We started with Angus heifers, followed by Poll Hereford heifers in 1985.

Cascade Poll Hereford Stud began in 1986 and developed slowly over the next 20 years through a mix of local and imported genetics whilst observing and learning the stud industry. Our Angus stud followed in 1995, purchasing initially from Calleen Stud and Romara Park Stud and then numerous other sales such as Millah Murrah and Comfort Hill dispersal and Vermont dispersal.

Early in 2003, we purchased the major portion of the Bobanken Poll Hereford female herd and Jack Smith became the Manager of both the stud and commercial herds.

Through to 2016 we were very active in showing our cattle, with many champions along the way, the highlight was being awarded the Urquhart Trophy at the Sydney Royal in 2006.

Our first on property bull sale was held in July 2004. Our sale has continued to grow and now presents around 80 bulls each year. In 2023 we are celebrating our 20th annual on property sale.

Through dry seasons and slack times, to the more recent buoyant times, we remain determined and passionate about what we do here at Cascade; we breed quality and consistency in our cattle in order to meet industry demands with both our Angus and Poll Herefords.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Through dry seasons and slack times, to the more recent buoyant times, we remain determined and passionate about what we do here at Cascade; we breed quality and consistency in our cattle in order to meet industry demands.

We keep an eye on the figures, but both eyes on characteristics like structure, temperament, feet and fertility. Every female at Cascade must get in calf at 2yrs and have a live calf, then get back in calf again at 3. We assess our cows continually and cull without favour.

Our Bellbrook farm is primarily the home of our commercial herd consisting of Poll Hereford, Angus and the time-tested Black Baldy. The herd gives us the opportunity to constantly test our genetics in the market and we are pleased to be recognised as a Top 100 Producer in the MLA Excellence in Eating Quality Awards 2021.

We strive to breed all those favourable yet simple traits in our cattle – length, width, softness, fertility, strength and structure.

…with Cascade, I was taken with the bone and framing, and their doability. History told us that southern cattle couldn’t handle the climate, but the Cascade cattle have adapted very well.
